How to Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone & iPad

Find and remove duplicate photos on your iPhone or iPad and free up gigabytes of storage. Covers the built-in Duplicates album and faster options.

⏱️ 5 minutes 📊 Easy 💾 Save 1GB-20GB

Free up 1GB to 20GB of storage by finding and deleting duplicate photos on your iPhone or iPad.

Why This Matters

Duplicate photos build up without you noticing. Common causes:

  • Saving the same image from Messages, WhatsApp, or email more than once
  • Editing a photo, which can leave the original and the edited copy
  • Burst shots and rapid taps of the same scene
  • Importing from a computer or restoring from a backup twice
  • Downloading a photo you already had in your library

A large library can hold several gigabytes of exact and near duplicate photos. Clearing them is one of the fastest ways to reclaim space.

Method 1: The Built-In Duplicates Album

iOS 16 and later detects duplicates for you and keeps them in one album.

1. Open the Photos App

Tap Photos on your home screen.

2. Go to Albums

Tap the Albums tab at the bottom.

3. Open Utilities, then Duplicates

Scroll to the bottom to Utilities and tap Duplicates.

If you do not see Duplicates, your library has no detected duplicates yet, or your device runs iOS 15 or earlier. Detection also runs in the background after an update, so give it time on a large library.

4. Merge the Duplicates

Tap Merge on a set, or tap Select, choose several, and merge them at once. Merge keeps the highest quality version and combines the relevant data. The extra copies move to Recently Deleted.

✅ Done! The duplicates are merged.

5. Empty Recently Deleted to Reclaim Space

Merged photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days and still use storage. To free the space now, open Albums → Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All. See the Clear Recently Deleted Photos guide for the full steps.

Where the Built-In Album Falls Short

The Duplicates album is useful but limited:

  • It needs iOS 16 or later.
  • It finds only exact or near exact copies.
  • It ignores similar photos, such as three shots of the same scene, burst frames, or slightly different angles.
  • It does not group screenshots or other clutter.
  • It can be slow to populate on a large library, and you still merge each set by hand.

Similar photos, not exact duplicates, are where most wasted space hides.

Method 2: Clean Duplicates and Similar Photos Faster

A dedicated cleaner finds more than exact copies and makes review quick. Dedupify scans your library, groups exact duplicates and visually similar photos together, highlights the best shot in each group, and lets you clear the rest with a swipe. It also helps with screenshots and other photo clutter the built-in album skips.

This matters most on large libraries, where merging sets one by one takes too long and similar shots never surface in the built-in album.

How Much Space Will I Save?

Savings depend on how many duplicates you have:

  • Light libraries: 1GB to 3GB
  • Regular users: 3GB to 10GB
  • Large or old libraries: 10GB to 20GB or more

To check your photo storage: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Photos.

Important Notes

⚠️ Check before you delete. Make sure you keep at least one copy of each photo you want.

💡 Tip: If you use iCloud Photos, deletions sync to all your devices. See Optimize Storage with iCloud Photos to keep full resolution in the cloud while saving space on your device.

Works on iPhone and iPad

This guide works on both iPhone and iPad. The built-in Duplicates album needs iOS 16 or later. A dedicated cleaner works from iOS 13.

Frequently asked questions

Does iPhone have a built-in way to find duplicate photos?

Yes, on iOS 16 and later. Open Photos, go to Albums, scroll to Utilities, and tap Duplicates. Older versions need a separate app.

Why can I not see the Duplicates album?

Either your library has no detected duplicates, your device runs iOS 15 or earlier, or detection has not finished. It runs in the background and can take time on a large library.

Will deleting duplicates remove my photos from iCloud?

Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, deletions sync to every device signed in to your account. The removed copies move to Recently Deleted for 30 days first.

What is the difference between duplicate and similar photos?

Duplicates are the same or near identical. Similar photos are different shots of the same moment, such as burst frames or small angle changes. The built-in album finds duplicates only, not similar photos.

How do I get back space right after merging?

Empty Recently Deleted. Merged copies stay there for 30 days and keep using storage until you remove them.
